The Duns Tew Book Club
The Book Club meets every four to five weeks. No set day as we try and accommodate the diaries of the majority. Some of us have been ‘reading’ together for 15 or so years. Over this period numbers have varied from a core of half a dozen to the current peak in the mid- teens, mainly, but not exclusively, women.
We like to think our choices are eclectic – and at a recent meeting agreed that ‘rural and sophisticated’ was an apt description of our group. There is no pressure to have read all or any of the book beforehand – we subscribe to the view that you cannot please all of the people all of the time.
Very occasionally we have a guest speaker – and although we try to be a bit structured, we aren’t worried if we go off at a tangent.
The Book of the Month can be chosen by a member, or sometimes it is what the library has sent. We’ve read Isabel Allende, Julien Barnes, Charles Dickens, Colin Dexter, Hilary Mantel, Philip Pulman and P G Wodehouse. Reads over the years have included
Cichiehimananda Ngozi Adichie – Purple Hibiscus
Pat Barker – Regeneration
Jostein Gaarder – The Christmas Mystery
Robert Harris – Pompeii
Barbara Kingsolver – The Poisonwood Bible
Gabriel Garcia Marquez – Love in the Time of Cholera
Haruki Murakami – The Wind Up Bird Chronicle
V S Naipaul – A Bend in the River
Ian McEwan – Enduring Love
Marilynne Robinson – Gilead
Alice Sebold – The Lovely Bones
Mary Ann Shaffer & Annie Barrows – The Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society
Amy Tan – The Kitchen God’s Wife
